چکیده

This study investigates how Mandarin Chinese speaking children and adults use prosody to mark focus in spontaneous speech. SVO sentences were elicited from 4and 8-year-olds and adults in a game setting. Sentence-medial verbs were acoustically analysed for both duration and pitch range in different focus conditions. We have found that like the adults, the 8-year-olds used both duration and pitch range to distinguish focus from non-focus. The 4-year-olds used only duration to distinguish focus from non-focus, unlike the adults and 8-year-olds. None of the three groups of speakers distinguished contrastive focus from non-contrastive focus using pitch range or duration. Regarding the distinction between narrow focus from broad focus, the 4and 8-yearolds used both pitch range and duration for this purpose, while the adults used only duration.

Production and Perception of Tone 3 Focus in Mandarin Chinese

This study uses production and perception experiments to explore tone 3 focus in Mandarin Chinese. Overall, contrastive focus in Mandarin is clearly marked with increased duration, intensity, and pitch range: in the experiments, listeners identified focused syllables correctly more than 90% of the time. However, a tone 3 syllable offers a smaller capacity for pitch range expansion under focus, ...

Prosodic marking of topic constructions in Mandarin Chinese

This study examines the prosodic marking of topic constructions in Mandarin Chinese. The findings suggest that, even though on the surface there are prosodic markings that differentiate topics from comments, the difference is the product of the prosodic phrasing, coupled with the declination and final lowering, in that a topic construction is usually decomposed into to two prosodic constituents...

Prosodic Focus Within and Across Languages

The fact that “purely” prosodic marking of focus may be weaker in some languages than in others, and that it varies in certain circumstances even within a single language, has not been commonly recognized. Therefore, this dissertation investigated whether and how purely prosodic marking of focus varies within and across languages. We conducted production and perception experiments using a parad...

Focus-marking in a tone language: Prosodic cues in Mandarin Chinese

We conducted a production study to investigate prosodic encoding of discourse information in Mandarin, a tone language where F0, duration, and intensity also distinguish lexical items. We tested whether (i) the presence/absence of correction and (ii) the new/given distinction are encoded prosodically. Our results indicate that correction was reflected in all three parameters: Corrective words h...

Post-focus Compression: Cross-linguistic Distribution and Historical Origin

One of the most important acoustic correlates of prosodic focus is post-focus compression (PFC) — the reduction of pitch range and amplitude of all post-focus components in an utterance. PFC has been found in many Indo-European, Altaic languages, and interestingly, also in Mandarin Chinese. Meanwhile, there have also been reports that many other languages do not have PFC, or lack any clear pros...
